Impact Study 2025: LaNorris Sellers

Ahh summertime: A lovely time in our college football schedule driven by hot-taking, list-making and sidewalk baking. Affectionally known as Talking Season, this is also when blowhards and engagement farmers tend to dictate the conversations, with not much else is going on in the sports world. And as most can attest, everyone loves a good quarterback debate.
Fresh off wrapping up my annual QB Impact Study, where I chart the top 40-50 returning passers against their most challenging opponents, this analyst is ready to join the fray and guide you towards a more fulfilling discussion. I ground through tape to find traits that translate and metrics that matter — far more illuminating than citing counting stats or scanning box scores. Plus, this exercise has a great track record for singling out the nation’s top signal callers.
This piece will focus on South Carolina's LaNorris Sellers, one of the most physically impressive QBs in college football.

The Skinny
A demigod blessed with awesome physical traits. Immense upside. A big, strong, fast, accurate, and prudent dual-threat. Can buffer and hold onto the ball too much. Plenty of sacks. Elite playmaker outside of structure. Must refine anticipation and lower-body mechanics.
The Fat
LaNorris Sellers has scary upside. He’s a lean, mean football machine. Big, strong, and toolsy, he’s capable of grinding out drives or racing 70 yards down the sideline. Plus, he’s excellent at avoiding mistakes with his arm, unlike other backyard ballers.
At 6’3, 242, he squarely fits the definition of “a hoss”. Sellers is a terror to bring down one-on-one. If you’re aiming high, odds are you’re about to become his next victim on his increasingly-growing highlight reel. At the same time, his strong lower half is tailor-made to withstand contact and keep churning. By my charting, he totaled 61 broken tackles last year – tied for 3rd-most in the SEC. And by rate, his clip cracked the conference’s top5. On designed runs in his Impact games, his rushing figures are far from incendiary (4.8 Y/A, 38% Success Rate, 15% Explosive, 17% Negative). Yet, his such 31.9% Broken Tackle Rate still would have made the SEC’s top10. Pair that with likely 4.5 - 4.6 speed and you have a real cyborg on your hands.

He’s overly an upper-body driven passer with kinetic movement from his shoulders and torso. The ball quickly is flipped out and released by Sellers’ ear. And because of his centralized arm mechanics, he’s quite good at hitting targets in his line of sight. To that point, he was 1/3 Impact QBs to sport both a +62% Accuracy% and sub-21% Uncatchable Pass Rate on pure dropback attempts. And when weighing his passes based on how far they traveled downfield, none of his peers topped his 62.4% clip. He has more than enough juice to see a target late and still drive it deep. Facile, his long throws can travel well with just a wrist flick. Little time is wasted locking and loading.

Outside of structure, he’s an undeniable playmaker. As a passer, all of his placement stats finished above the group average; and he was 5x more likely to log an explosive than a turnover-worthy pass. Over 70% of his scrambles occurred against increased competition where he averaged 10.2 yards per pop with 11 explosives. That doesn’t happen unless you have a rare combination of instincts and burst to dust would-be tacklers. Rushers could be close enough to see their reflection in his rec specs; and Sellers still escaped on the reg. Additionally, of the 15 scurries on later downs, 9 moved the chains. W-E-A-P-O-N.

That said, he certainly could stand to fix some lower body kinks, reduce buffering, and limit negative plays. Though pretty acceptable in rhythm, bad stuff shows up when he has to reset or move. He can go dead leg and only use his arm, fail to step into attempts, throw from imbalanced and wonky bases, and exhibit flat feet. When stepping up, he can miss low. And when fading back, he can sail tries over heads.

Messy stuff but correctable. Moreover, misfires weren’t as visible as they might have been thanks to South Carolina’s scheme and Sellers’ safe spray. Over 40% of his tries came off a screen, RPO, or play action, less than a third went beyond ten yards downfield, and his 8.4 average depth of target fell into the study’s bottom-dozen. He rarely presses; less than a seventh of his throws targeted tight windows.

Sellers might be the most prudent passer in the country. Including all games, only a couple of other collegiate QBs averaged more time to throw (3.3 seconds). Perhaps a sign of lack of experience, anticipation skills, or trust in his pass catchers, but he habitually held onto the ball too long. If his read isn’t clean and his man isn’t open, Sellers in no rush to get rid of the ball. After all, with his playmaking skills, why unnecessarily risk the biscuit? Sellers’ Interceptable Pass Rate finished well into the green in every breakout. For the most part, his turnover-worthy throws were due to poor placement rather than decision-making.

However, the other side of the coin to that modus operandi is drawing extra pressure. Good (or even average) pass blocking units have been nonexistent in the Beamer Era. Including 2024, South Carolina has finished inside the SEC’s bottom3 in Pressure Rate three of the last four seasons. Fire, meet gasoline.

No matter who was at fault, over a third of Sellers’ true dropbacks saw a form of duress. And even with his magic managing the situation, he posted the group’s 6th-highest Sack Rate with a below-average Pressure:Sack Ratio. Subsequently, he developed fumbleitis. His 10 fumbles were the most in the conference (only 3 came on designed runs).
A microcosm of his style: The Gamecocks repped their 3-most favorite pass concepts (Mesh, Sail, and All Verts) a combined 98 times last year; Sellers tallied 34 sacks+scrambles on those snaps. Yes, his rendering time did improve as he logged more reps. But, it’s too much to sweep under the rug. Going all in on electric football chaos isn’t sustainable.

Luckily, Sellers has the capabilities to be both Superman and Clark Kent. Plus, practice will help make perfect, or something very close to it. Clear kryptonite or no, his talent and mental makeup have him in prime position to soar to the top of the sport.
